New Acceptance Of Massage Therapy

MASSAGE IN THE WORKPLACE

The element of providing table and chair massage services in the workplace is not new and has been offered for at least 15 years in Winnipeg and 25 years in larger urban North American cities . The recognition of massage therapy for relieving stress and improving productivity in the workplace is not a recent innovation. It is a welcomed one by the many massage practitioners and therapists which are graduating from the three massage schools in Winnipeg. It is also a great publicity for the healing and health provider industry.

REHABILITATING THE IMAGE OF MASSAGE

It also is helpful to rehabilitate the image of massage which has been tarnished by the alternate lifestyle choices of the 60's and the proliferation of body-rub parlours which were commonly known as "massage parlours". These centres were and still exist as sites for sexual gratification. Slowly, therapeutic massage facilities are rehabilitating the image of massage. City administrators are slow to modify licenses for practitioners of chair massage, only allowing remedial registered massage therapists to offer chair massage in the workplace. Other larger cities like Toronto have brought their licensing practices into the 21st century by allowing such a licensing classification of practitioner for chair massage freeing up the massage therapists to do 'therapy' and leave the stress-reduction chair massage to less-trained practitioners. The city of Winnipeg does monitor those providing sex massage in massage parlours, allowing a 'massagist' license for those working the sex-trade through massage parlours in Winnipeg. Licensing is becoming more supervised and rigorous where the credentials for massage clinic operators are being critically assessed. Only accredited graduates from reputable institutions are being allowed to practice therapeutic massage. This is a welcome situation for legitimate operators. This only applies within the Winnipeg jurisdiction as there is no provincial regulation legislation for massage therapists. These only exist in Ontario and British Colombia.

DEDICATION OF ESTABLSHED COLLEGES

It has been through the persistance and dedication of established colleges which have developped massage practitioners and therapists over the last twenty years, especially, that massage therapy is rapidly becoming accepted. It is increasingly recognized as being a reputable, technically sound, remedial application method complementary to physiotherapy and chiropractic. Physicians in many cases are still the main diagnostic identifiers of pathologies, however, massage practitioners and therapists are front line providers of musculo-skeletal and arthrokinesthetic remedial treatments for recreational, industrial, and structural acute and chronic dysfunctions.

MASSAGE THERAPY AS COMPLEMENTARY METHODOLOGY

Massage therapists and practitioners are also providing much relief to individuals who suffer from osteo and rheumatoid arthritic conditions by allieviating some symptoms and restoring or maintaining ranges of motion through resistance training exercise, where possible. Pain management is still being shared with the pharmacological providers of pain-killers yet through the active participation of mobility and flexibility regimens patients of massage therapists are able to improve their health and extend the range of pain free activities in their daily living.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE PUBLIC

Massage therapies and physical therapies offered by therapists and practitioners are meeting the needs of the public for alternative and complementary treatments to the allopathic prescriptions and traditions of physicians. Pain-killers are sometimes necessary when the pain is acute and unbearable, and there is a need for pain relief for sleep or working . It is however dangerous for an individual to become dependent on pain-killers over a long period of usage while neglecting the cause of the pain and dealing with the source. That's where massage therapy can be useful to break the cycle of dependency by introducing an alternative pathway for the pain's resolution.
